As Program Director, Dr. Donald McClain, M.D., serves as a resource for investigators
seeking to perform clinical research on the center. He reviews all proposals for center
use, and ensures adherence to the Health Sciences Institutional Review Board, NIH
regulations, and Advisory Committee policies.

Dr. McClain received MD and PhD degrees from the Rockefeller University/Cornell
program and further medical training in internal medicine and endocrinology from
Stanford and the University of California at San Diego. His research interests are
pathogenic mechanisms in type 2 diabetes, diabetic complications,and obesity; the role
of iron in regulating metabolism; and biochemical mechanisms for nutrient sensing through
enzymatic O-linked protein glycosylation.

He is Professor of Internal Medicine and Biochemistry and holds the Betillyon Chair
in Diabetes Research at the University of Utah, where he also directs the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
